They sometimes get lost in the shuffle of provincial contenders in 4A volleyball, but the Cornerstone Falcons boys and girls are also both on the road to success this year in 2A.

The girls are going to provincials this weekend in Foam Lake, starting Friday afternoon. Coach Lee Behrns said they've been focusing on the mental side of the games in practice.

“(We were) having fun, keeping it light, making sure and doing some serve-receive stuff,” he said. “Making sure free balls are 100 per cent passed. If a free ball comes to you, we can not give those mistakes away.”

He said one weekend they counted 18 free balls given away and although they won that game, it’s something they want to clean up now.

At conference play, they gained confidence with the wins they got.

“All our hard work has paid off now that we’re in 2A for real,” he said.

Ranked five out of six teams, they beat Davidson, Shaunavon and Plenty, and all of those games were within two points in the third set.

“Knowing LCBI was one of the top ranked teams in the whole province, playing them in the final was to just get a look and see what we’ve got in the province,” Behrns said.

They stayed in Yorkton Thursday night and will play three games in the first afternoon, and one Saturday. If they win one game, they’ll get into the playoff round.

“It’s all new to us and the girls, it’s new to them and it’s one they’ll cherish, knowing it all started with 84 teams in 2A and to be down to the last ten.”

The Faclons boys, meanwhile, are at Regina Harvest City starting Saturday for their regionals. If they finish in the top three, they'll move on to provincials next weekend in Wilkie.
