The Peacock Toilers improved to 6-0 in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Girls Basketball League on Thursday night, but it wasn't easy.

The Toilers were given everything that they could handle from the B.C.A. Cougars in a 66-64 game that came down to the final buzzer.

"We struggled a lot with the 1-3-1 I feel and we missed a lot of our easy hoops throughout the game, but they were shooting really well," said Peacock senior Abby Busch, who finished 10 points, including eight in the second half of the win.

The loss drops the Cougars to 4-3 this season, but they showed that they can compete with the first place Toilers.

"It felt really good to play this well against Peacock," said Cougars senior Melissa Ellis. "We came out with our best confidence and played with all our heart, so we don't feel sad about this one, we're just going to come in harder for our next game against them."

Peacock just wasn't able to put B.C.A. away during the game. The Toilers pushed their lead to as many as eight points in the second half, but the Cougars also found a way to fight back into the game.

B.C.A. had the ball in the dying seconds and threw up a potential game-winning three-point shot that just missed at the buzzer.

"The adrenaline was pumping in those last few seconds, we went really hard, but it was a bummer that we missed that last three," said Ellis, who posted 13 points in the loss.

"We've been a weaker team over the past few years, so it feels really good to come in strong, give it our best shot and so we're really excited for the rest of the season, we think we're going to keep growing."

Mya Matthies had a team-high 20 points in the loss for B.C.A.

On the Toilers' side, Piper Ingalls picked up 16 points in the win, while Anna Maelde scored 12.

"Our defence got a lot better throughout the game," said Busch, "At the beginning, we were letting them drive but we switched it up a bit, had some gap and help side and that seemed to really help."

In the boys' game, the Toilers rolled to a 94-47 win over the Cougars. Devin Baumann picked up a game-high 22 points in the win for Peacock, which puts their record at 3-3 and drops B.C.A. to 1-6.

The Toilers and Cougars will meet for a rematch in Caronport on Tuesday night. The girls' game goes at 6:20 p.m. and the boys tip off at 8 p.m.

Also coming up on Tuesday, the Vanier Vikings and Spirits play host to the Assiniboia Rockets at 5:50 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

In junior basketball action from Thursday, the Cornerstone Falcons topped Vanier, 48-40, and the Peacock Green Toilers beat the Central Cyclones, 68-41, in the girls' games. Vanier pulled out a 70-44 win over Central Red in the boys' game.
