The Caronport Cougars senior girls volleyball team picked up a big win over the weekend.

They attended the University of Saskatchewan tournament in Saskatoon and came away on top of the 24-team tournament with a win over Prince Albert Carlton in the final on Saturday.

“We had some rough games, but in our final game we played amazing and that's what we're really excited about, is just playing to the best of our ability,” said Erika Cartman, head coach of the Cougars.

Caronport attended a tournament two weekends ago as a tune-up for the U of S tournament and came away with a second place finish. Cartman said they were just able to build off that and got stronger throughout this past weekend.

“We were pretty nervous for the U of S tournament going, but (the win) just feels really good and I hope we just keep improving,” she said. “The whole team is growing, which is just great.”

The Cougars won three matches on Friday and then picked up three more wins on Saturday to finish the weekend undefeated. They were able to roll over the PA Carlton in the final, which is big for Caronport, a 3A school.

“In the first set, we did pretty well, it ended up 25-11, we had so much energy on our side and we just played to the best of our abilities and everyone was working together,” said Cartman. “The second set was a little bit slower for us, but we managed to pull it out in the end and that's what counts.

“That first set was definitely a great set for us as we played the best that I've seen in a while.”

There's a mixture of grade 11s and 12s on the Cougars this season and Cartman hopes that this weekend's win can give them a big boost as they head back into league play here in Moose Jaw.

“We're all growing and learning how to play with each other, so it's good,” she said.

Caronport returns to the court on Tuesday night when they host the Peacock Toilers at 6:15pm. There's five games in total on Tuesday with the Central girls hosting Rouleau and the Vanier girls heading to Assiniboia. In boys action, Peacock heads over to Cornerstone and Vanier is in Avonlea.
