The local curling champions are pipped into the Champions Dinner on Thursday night at Mosaic Place.

Since the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre opened in downtown Moose Jaw, the sport of curling has been growing rapidly in the Friendly City and so too have the wins for local curlers.

The city has always had a strong curling tradition, but last season was an especially big year as a local team headed to the senior women's nationals and also won gold at the Saskatchewan Winter Games.

To recognize the big year for the curling in Moose Jaw, Curl Moose Jaw hosted a Champions Dinner on Thursday night at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre to honour the past year and look ahead to the new season.

“It's a fabulous night,” said Danielle Sicinski, president of Curl Moose Jaw. “We almost have a sell out crowd for it on the first time around.”

The night honoured the Carson Ackerman rink, which came back with gold from the Saskatchewan Winter Games in Prince Albert; the Lorraine Arguin rink, which captured the senior women's provincial championship, as well as a silver medal at nationals; and all the league champions throughout the year.

“Curl Sask has an event as well too that honours their provincial champions, so we thought, lets do this, lets make it a big event and our league champs should get this special acknowledgement and as well too our volunteers, which are the off ice champions,” said Sicinski.

Close to 100 people turned out to honour the championship teams and Sicinski said they were very happy with the response.

“We're definitely going to try to make this an annual event, it's really exciting,” she said. “It's a great way to kick off the season too and honour all our on and off ice champions.”

Moose Jaw curlers have tasted a lot of success in the new building and they're hoping that it continues moving forward.

“We've got to keep going with all this momentum,” said Sicinski. “We've got one banner up on display and now we get to add two more, so since the building has been open – it's only been open three years – we've won three provincial banners, that's pretty exciting.”

The curling season in Moose Jaw opens up next week with the ice going into the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre right now.
