The Moose Jaw High School football League had its first game in the city of Moose Jaw to close out week 2.

The Central Cyclones blanked the Vanier Vikings 34-0 Saturday thanks to good play on offence, defence and special teams.

Although his team is on top of the league right now, Cyclones coach Colin Belsher respects the team they defeated.

“Vanier, it’s always a tough game when we play them, they always come out to play,” said Belsher. “So we knew we’d be up for it and we knew they’d be up for it too. We had a battle with them at the end of the year last year in our playoff game last year. But I’m proud of these guys. Our kids played really well.”

Kaleb Schanoski scored a pair of touchdowns in the win, including a 12-yard run and another one on a 58-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.

“We still have a lot to work on,” he said. “A win is a win, but there was a lot of penalties. We still have a lot to improve on. But beating one of our rivals is a great thing. Even with all the penalties, we went out and we played a great game.”

In acknowledging that his team has some younger players getting experience in skill positions, Cyclones head coach Colin Belsher knows his team can still play better.

“We had a lot of penalties. A lot of mental mistakes,” he said. “If we can clean those things up, I think we’ll be better off.”

The Cyclones aren't going to spend a lot of time celebrating their win, as they're already looking forward to next week. Central’s next game is Friday afternoon against Peacock.

“Our heads are past this one, we’re looking forward to Peacock already,” said Schanoski. “We’re about to grind as soon as the next practice starts and we’re going to bring it to Peacock.”

Earlier in the week, Peacock were shut out in Swift Current.

The lights were on, and the sideline was packed full of fans, as the Swift Current Comp Colts delivered a statement win in their biggest home game of the regular season.

Thursday Night Lights brought a battle with the visiting Moose Jaw Peacock Tornadoes at Colts Field, and with it, a resounding 23-0 shutout win for Swift Current.

"I think it started with the defence, and I guess it ends with the defence when you don't let a team score," said Colts head coach Derek Murdoch. "The defence was steady right from the start, and that kind of gives you a chance to kind of get to the game plan."

The Colts advance to 1-1 on the season, and have a three-day stint without a practice.

After that? Prep for the biggest game of the regular season.

"We're going to challenge them to come back Monday ready to go," said Murdoch, whose Colts squad is off to Eastern Saskatchewan next Saturday to face the Yorkton Raiders.

In the league’s other game, the Weyburn Eagles defeated the Estevan Elecs 34-26.

Other than Friday’s game between Central and Peacock, Next week’s games include Vanier at Weyburn and Swift Current is at Yorkton.
