With a lot of returning players, there’s not a lot of spots available on the Moose Jaw Warriors’ roster heading into the weekend, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be battles.

The players that have made it through from rookie camp to this weekend’s main camp will be looking to turn heads and secure their spot within the organization, whether that’s on this year’s roster or in the future.

“Hopefully the organization realizes that I can play at this level, I’ve always wanted to play in the WHL, it’s been a goal of mine since I was younger and it would be a dream come true to have a chance to play for this team,” said 17-year-old forward Jaxen Kaluski.

Kaluski is one of the players that will be fighting to earn a spot on the Warriors’ this season.

He put a good step forward on Friday with a goal and some physical play during the final scrimmage of rookie camp, which his Team Grey won 3-1 over Team Red.

“I thought I got better as rookie camp went on, it felt good to get on the ice for the first time in this rink,” said Kaluski.  “It was good to finish on a goal for once, I’ve had a lot of chances over the past two skates and it just felt nice to put one home finally.”

Coming off a strong season with the Lloydminster Bobcats, that saw them make an appearance in the Telus Cup, Kaluski was listed by the Warriors last year and has been able to move into the conversation for a roster spot.

He said he came into this week’s camp looking to show both sides of his game.

“I want to be able to put the puck in the net when I have to and be able to have a physical side to me when I need to as well, when the game gets a little tougher,” said Kaluski.

17-year-old defenceman Chase Hartje was able to make people take notice during his two scrimmages with Team Grey on Friday, scoring twice in the morning session.

The Bemidji, Minnesota product attended camp with the Warriors last season and said he took a lot away from that experience.

“I learned that everybody is good, you can’t take anybody lightly,” said Hartje.

“I’ve definitely focused on getting a lot faster and stronger, that was the big thing last year, I wasn’t as fast as a lot of the guys, so it kind of stood out.”

In 40 games between Great Plains and Bemidji High last season, Hartje was able to put up four goals and 21 points.

“Offence is more of my game and I didn’t score at all last year in rookie camp, so this has been an improvement,” he said.

“I just want to show my offence ability and my defence too.”

Both players will be on the ice over the weekend with the Warriors as main camp opens on Saturday with scrimmages at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.  There’s also a scrimmage on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

Training camp will wrap up on Sunday with the annual Black and White Game at 4 p.m.

The Tribe opens the preseason on Tuesday with a rookie game against the Swift Current Broncos.

Admission for both the intrasquad game and the Warriors’ preseason opener will be by donation with the funds going to the Canadian Mental Health Association in memory of former Warriors’ prospect Ethan Williams.
