Over the years the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Flying Fins have had some great swimmers go through their program, and they're trying to find more in the pre-competitive age groups.

Gord Shields, the new head coach of the Flying Fins, is looking forward to rebuilding the pre-competitive program, called SwimQuest.

“What we’re doing for new swimmers... next week, Sept. 3, 4, 5 we’re having a free mini camp for swimmers to come to the pool, from 6-7 p.m. at the Kinsmen pool,” said Shields. “At this three day camp, the coach will teach them some basic swimming skills and we’ll also do some assessments.”

Kids don't even have to be able to swim yet, but just be comfortable in the water without their parents and be five years old as of April 30, 2020. There are four different levels and kids will be put in based on their levels.

Eventually they may be able to grow to be as good as Cadence Johns, who won five gold two silver and two bronze at the Western Canada Summer Games earlier this month.

“I coached her for two or three before I retired. She’s just continued to move forward over the past year when I wasn’t here,” he said. She’s already qualified for Olympic trials, so that’s a major goal for us next year, to see what she can do at Olympic trials ... that’ll definitely be a highlight of the year for next season for the competitive swimmers.”

Registration is available by contacting Shields through the club or calling 306-690-5791.

Registration for returning swimmers is Sept. 1 and new swimmers will need to be registered Sept. 4.
