It’s been 12 years since he’s been eligible, and former Moose Jaw Warriors great Theoren Fleury will have to wait at least one more year.

The 2020 inductees are former Flames great and ex-Kamloops Blazer Jarome Iginla, Slovakian forward – and former Portland Winter Hawk – Marian Hossa, Oilers defenceman Kevin Lowe, ex-Chicago defenceman Doug Wilson, Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland, as a builder, and Canadian gold-medal-winning goaltender Kim St. Pierre.

There has arguably been no greater member of the Warriors than Fleury. Originally born in Oxbow, he played the first four seasons that the Warriors were in Moose Jaw, and is still the all-time leading scorer for the team, with 201 goals and 271 assists for 472 points in 274 games. He tied for the league lead in scoring in 1987-88 with Swift Current’s Joe Sakic with 160 points – a single season total that is still the best in Warriors’ history.

Fleury was the first Warrior to have his number retired by the team.

After a half-season in the International Hockey League with Salt Lake City before going on to help the Calgary Flames win the 1989 Stanley Cup, he embarked on a wild NHL career, spent mostly in Calgary.

Fleury scored 1,088 points in 1,084 years in 15 National Hockey League seasons. He concluded his professional career with a season in Belfast where he racked up 74 points in 34 regular-season games and added 13 points in seven playoff games.

After his playing career, it was learned that the many off-ice issues he had can be traced to sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of former coach Graham James. James has served time in jail for that and other offenses, including those against Sheldon Kennedy, while Fleury has become an advocate for sexual abuse survivors.
