Brayden Point is heading to the NHL All-Star Game.

In just his second season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the former Moose Jaw Warriors captain was announced as an injury replacement for Lightning teammate Victor Hedman on Wednesday.

After a stellar rookie season last year, Point has broken out for the first place Lightning with 19 goals and 43 points, both career-highs, through 48 games.

Former teammate, and fellow Lightning prospect, Brett Howden isn’t surprised by Point’s quick rise to NHL stardom.

“It’s really cool for him,” said Howden. “We all seen it here for five years, how dynamic he is, how hard he works and for him to get that accomplishment is very special for him, but pretty cool for everyone around here to see.”

Point has spent the season as the Lightning’s second line centre, which has turned into the team’s shutdown line. Despite playing against the opposition’s top players, Point has a plus-19 rating this season.

The All-Star Game is being hosted in Tampa Bay and Point will be joined by Lightning teammates Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, as well as head coach Jon Cooper, on the Atlantic Division squad.

The All-Star Weekend opens on Saturday with the Skills Competition, followed by the 2018 All-Star Game at Amalie Arena in Tampa on Sunday.
