The Moose Jaw Generals were great offensively on Thursday night, but still have some work to do on the defensive end.

They controlled the play from the start of the game and built up a 3-0 lead midway through the second before skating past the Swift Current Legionnaires 6-3 at Mosaic Place.

The win moves the Generals three points clear of Regina and Tisdale for first place in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League at 6-1-0-1 on the year.

“We created for some chances for ourselves, we got to the net and got some puck luck to for some pucks to go in the net,” said assistant coach Jeremy Ebbett.

While the team is coming away happy with the effort on the offensive end, which continues to get stronger each time out, Ebbett added that their defensive play on Thursday left something to be desired.

“We gave up 27 shots and probably 18 of them were point blank scoring opportunities, so you can't have that an expect to win every night,” said Ebbett.

“Colby (Entz) stopped a lot of point blank opportunities tonight. Both of our goalies have been good, but Colby was excellent tonight and those point blank opportunities, we need to go to work at practice and eliminate those.”

Tyson Manz opened the scoring for Moose Jaw with a shorthanded marker with seven minutes to go in the first period. They extended that lead to 3-0 early in the second period with goals from Chantz Petruic and Tanner Manz that came just 1:22 apart.

Tyde Hutchinson got Swift Current on the board midway through the middle frame and Drieden Gauthier made it a one-goal game just 29 seconds into the third, but Moose Jaw took over from there.

Tanner Manz picked up his second of the game and then he assisted on Austin Johnston's goal, which made it 5-2 with just 13 minutes to go.

Evan Thomas scored into an empty net with 40 seconds left to seal the win for Moose Jaw.

“We've got good skilled guys on our team that can put the puck in the net, we've got a good back end and good goalies, so we can get wins every time we step on the ice,” said Tanner Manz.

“We're just going hard to the net and are getting rewarded.”

Tanner Manz had two goals and three points in the win, while Tyson Manz, Thomas and Johnston all picked up a goal and two points. Cole Fonstad finished with two assists for the Generals.

Moose Jaw threw 41 shots on the Swift Current net and while Entz had to make just 24 saves in the game, he was tested a number of times in tight by the Legionnaires, but made some big saves to keep the Generals in front.

“Going into every game, we know our goalies are going to be there and give us a chance to win, so it's good,” said Manz.

The Generals get a week off before their next game action. They will return to the ice on Thursday in Saskatoon against the Contacts.
