Home ice wasn’t very kind to the Moose Jaw Generals over the weekend.

The local midget AAA hockey team suffered a pair of losses this past weekend, falling 4-2 to the Notre Dame Argos on Saturday and then dropping a 2-0 game to the Notre Dame Hounds on Sunday in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

It was the tale of two games for the Generals as they fired 49 shots on the Argos’ net in Saturday’s loss, but could only muster 24 shots in Sunday’s shutout loss to the Hounds.

“That was a good hockey team that we played (Sunday), if we would have played (Saturday) like we did (on Sunday), we would have came out with a win,” said Generals coach Kevin Moore.  “The kids are starting to figure it out slowly, but with 18 new kids, there was going to be some growing pains.”

Moose Jaw product Bryan Thomson stifled the Generals on Saturday as he made 47 saves to backstop the Argos to a 4-2 win at Mosaic Place.

The Generals fell behind 3-0 by the midway point of the second period, but battled back with goals from Evan Sare and captain Nolan Jones to make it a one-goal game with 15 minutes to play.

That was as close as the Generals were able to get the game as the Argos added an empty net goal in the final minute to seal the victory.

On Sunday, the Generals came out of the gate hard, but despite plenty of pressure in the opening 20 minutes, the game remained scoreless.

The Hounds took over in the second period and picked up the game’s only two goals with Zach Plusinski scoring on the power play five minutes into the frame, followed by Adam Zimmerman scoring just over three minutes later.

Moore said they’re still looking for a consistent effort throughout a game to have success.

“If I had to throw a number out there that it’s probably 30 out of the 60 minutes,” he said.  “The kids are starting to recognize that we have two good shifts with pressure and then the next group goes and takes a shift off and we’re back in our end for a minute, so we just need consistency.

“You can’t take a shift off or you’re going to lose.”

Jake Davidson was a definite bright spot for the Generals on Sunday as he turned away 45 shots to make sure that Moose Jaw had a chance in the game.

“He was fantastic,” said Moore.  “We hung him out to dry a few times where they’re alone in front and he’s making the save.  He’s a real good goalie.”

The Generals are now 2-2-1-1 on the year.  They will return to the ice this Saturday with a rematch against the Notre Dame Argos in Wilcox.

Generals goalie Ethan Hein is off to the 2017 WHL Cup in Calgary this week with Team Saskatchewan. The tournament runs from Wednesday-Sunday.
