The opening weekend of the season didn't start exactly how the Moose Jaw Generals had hoped, but they righted the ship quickly.

The Generals fell 6-3 to the Prince Albert Mintos in their season opener on Saturday and then put together a bounce-back effort with a 2-1 win over the Beardy's Blackhawks on Sunday.

Head Coach Ray Wareham felt that the team looked nervous in their season opener against the Mintos.

"I thought with a little more veteran team that we wouldn't have those nerves, but it was a tough start, we ran into some bad weather, got there late and had to rush a little bit," said Wareham.

"We weren't as sharp as we'd like to be on Saturday, but the guys really responded with a real good effort on Sunday and found a way to win the hockey game in a tough building to get a split."

These two games were the start of five straight away from Mosaic Place to open the season for Moose Jaw. Wareham said it's a tough early season test for the team, but he feels overall they put together the start that they needed to.

"Those were two tough buildings to play in and now we've got to play in the Warman Showcase and the fifth one of the road is in Notre Dame against the Hounds, so it doesn't get easier, but it's a good challenge for our guys to see where we measure against the guys who were at the top last year," said Wareham.

"We're happy with the split, we felt we could have been a bit better, but we'll get ready for this weekend."

On Saturday, the Generals trailed 1-0 after one, but were able to tie the game up early in the second period when Casey McDonald scored on the power play. That was short lived as the Mintos scored four unanswered to finish the period with a 5-1 lead.

Ben Wourms-Rowe and Brendan Kemp scored in the third period as the Generals started to find their legs.

That carried over into Sunday where the Generals went into the Willow Cree Memorial Sport Centre and pulled off a hard-fought one-goal win over the Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks opened the scoring with a power-play goal early in the second period, but Moose Jaw answered back with goals from McDonald and Cody Davis to take the lead and they held in the third.

Generals goalie Reece Hodson made 35 saves in Sunday's win, including 12 in the third period.

"We just have to clean up the little things," said Wareham. "I thought on Saturday our power play looked really good, there’s a couple tweaks that we need to make on our penalty kill, but overall, our work ethic jumped from Saturday to Sunday, so hopefully that's the main thing and then tweak some things and be ready to go for (this) Friday."

The Generals will play in the Warman Showcase for two games this weekend. They have a rematch with the Mintos on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. and then they meet up with the Tisdale Trojans on Sunday night at 7 p.m.
