After a long winter, you can dust off those golf clubs and hit the links here in Moose Jaw starting this weekend.

The Hillcrest and Lynbrook Golf Clubs are opening up tee-to-green on all 18 holes, while the Deer Ridge Golf Course has nine holes open heading into this weekend.

It's a late start to the golf season across the province after some spring snow, but the courses are in good shape as they get ready to tee it up for another summer.

At the Lynbrook, greenskeeper Owen Morhart said he's happy with how the course held up over the winter.

"I'm standing on the last green taking the tarp off right now and the outside where tarp wasn't is yellow, but underneath is a pretty nice green that I think everyone will enjoy putting on for the first time (Saturday)," said Morhart.

"The course looks pretty good, it's still pretty yellow out, but the greens are nice and the tees are nice."

There's a lot of work that goes into making sure that the course can handle the long winters here in Saskatchewan and that it's ready to go for the opening of the season.

"In the winter, it's all clean up and fungicide the greens and then sand and tarp them, which is a long gruelling process, and then in the spring, it's clean up from the winter and roll up the tarps," said Morhart.

Heading into this season, the Lynbrook has had some challenges with work being done by the City of Moose Jaw on the Buffalo Pound to Moose Jaw water supply transmission line project. The course will start the season with some work still needing to be done to holes 1, 2, 4 and 9.

"It's not as bad as we first expected, but there will be a few little issues for golfers. Hopefully our landscapers will be here in the next week or so, get some sod laid down and we’ll be good to go," said Morhart.

The work isn't done once the course opens for the greens-keeping crew as Morhart said they have a staff of 6-7 workers that do the day-to-day upkeep throughout the season.

"My crew has been here for 11 years now, most of them, so I'm pretty lucky," he said. "They're out here cutting every day, fertilizing, keeping it manicured so that everybody enjoys themselves.”

Contact the pro shops at all three local courses to book a tee time or to inquire about memberships.

For this weekend only, the Hillcrest will be working on a first-come, first-serve basis with tee time bookings starting on Monday.

The Harbor Golf Club in Elbow and Deer Valley Golf Club near Lumsden are both open this weekend as well, while the Long Cree Golf Club in Avonlea is still waiting to open up.
