It might have been the first competition of the year for the Moose Jaw Cobra Cheerleading Club, but they started things off on a strong note.

The local club sent two teams to the Swarm the Hat cheer competition in Medicine Hat this past weekend and both are coming back with stellar performances.

The Cobra’s senior team ended up finishing first in their division and they also captured the club’s first ever Grand Champion title. “That was really exciting,” said Cobra coach Christa Jamieson. “They had a really good weekend.”

The Grand Champion title has awarded to the team which receives the highest score out of all the teams at the competition. The club had never received that honour before and Jamieson said the team put in a lot of work to get to that point this early in the season.

“They recently had some letdowns and setbacks, but they pushed through in the last two weeks, creating new portions of their routine and working really hard and focusing towards it,” said Jamieson. “I was a very proud coach this weekend seeing that all come through with the result that they were looking for.”

The Cobra’s young Pom Team didn’t have any competition in their division, giving them a default first place finish, but they put together an incredible performance during the competition. The team “hit zero”, which means that they received zero deductions during their routine.

“They did really good for their first competition,” said Jamieson.

This competition kicked off the season for the Cobras and they will really get busy over the next month.

“We’re heading into competition season,” said Jamieson. “Next month in Regina, we have our first one in Saskatchewan, which is the Ice Breaker, we’ll have a few different teams in our division, so it will be more of a competition, but we’re hoping to come away with a better score than this last time.”
