Over 280 athletes from around Saskatchewan were in Moose Jaw last weekend for the annual Spring Into Spring Invitational artistic gymnastics competition.

Gymtastiks Moose Jaw had a fantastic showing at their home competition, capturing 47 medals in total over the two days.

"It's later in the season and our gymnasts are starting to peak now, so it's just nice that they were able to show off all the hard work that they put in during practices and do it in front of our home crowd at our meet," said Jaime Olmstead, a coach with Gymtastiks.

Olmstead added that the athletes always look forward to this weekend as they get to perform in front of their family and friends, "It's the opportunity that they get once a year usually," she said.

Shaine Closs had a great competition for Gymtastiks, taking first place in the vault, bars, beam and floor in the Junior Olympic 7 level.

Olmstead said the athletes have been making some good progress throughout the year and that was on display this weekend.

"There is a qualifying score that the JO3 and higher levels have to obtain before they can go to provincials and all of our athletes have obtained that score," she said. "At the beginning of the year, we didn't quite have everyone there, so they came back into the gym and worked much harder, their scores have gone up, so they're well on their way to qualifying for the provincial championship."

With 15 clubs from around the province taking part in the competition, it's a busy two days for Gymtastiks Moose Jaw. Olmstead said their volunteers put in a lot of hours to make the competition happen.

"It's remarkable how many people come together to volunteer their time to make sure it’s a success," she said. "We have so many different commitments that are required for it, we feed all the judges and coaches and we make sure that there's a concession, and then we also do raffles and sell flowers, then there's scorekeeping and awards."

The club will be in Yorkton for another Invitational next weekend and then provincials go in May.
