The playoffs arrive this week in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Volleyball League and the Caronport Cougars will be cruising into the postseason.

The Cougars went into Peacock Collegiate on Tuesday night and picked up a straight set win over the Toilers to close out the regular season.

“We were in Regina on the weekend for the Christian School Invitational and we were really consistent all weekend and have a pretty good flow going right now,” said Caronport head coach Derek Zacharias. “It's nice to watch the girls perform, they're a pretty special group.”

Peacock struggled in the opening set, falling 25-8, but they gave the Cougars a good fight over the next two sets with Caronport winning 25-17 and 25-16.

“It was a disappointing way to start, we found ourselves in an 8-0 hole pretty quick and that sucked any life out of us right there,” said Peacock head coach Bart Mihalicz. “They were letting it rip with the serves and we were just unable to handle it and got ourselves behind the eight-ball pretty early.”

Caronport has been the top team in the league all season, but didn't look as sharp during action last week. They turned it up against the Toilers on Tuesday, playing an aggressive style that has been their trademark this season.

“We have a real strong left side attack, so Emily and Shay were really strong on that side and I liked the way we played out of system, we were able to transition those into a lot of attacks as well,” said Zacharias.

“You always hope to be peaking at the end of the season. I'm excited about what we're doing right now and looking forward to one more week of training.”

With the playoffs on the horizon, the Toilers are hoping to be able to bounce back quickly to avoid an early exit.

“If we come out like that against whoever we play in the playoffs were going to be in trouble,” said Mihalicz. “We've got a good week of practice here to get ready.”

While the end result wasn't what Peacock was looking for, Mihalicz added that he did like the girls work ethic during the game.

“We had a couple of hustle plays that we would have been lacking earlier in the year, which was nice to see,” he said.

Caronport will get a bye into the semifinals next week as the top seed and Zacharias said the rest of this week will be about fine tuning their attack to prepare for that game.

“Most of our training is going to be six-on-six drills, we'll work on specific aspects of just paying attention to detail and focusing on working together and working hard,” he said.

In other senior girls volleyball action on Tuesday night, the Central Cyclones won in four sets over the Vanier Spirits.

The Peacock Toilers rolled over the Cornerstone Falcons in three straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-11) in boys action; the Vanier Vikings needed five sets to beat the Central Cyclones (25-19, 19-25, 25-14, 14-25, 15-12); and Avonlea went into Rouleau and won in straight sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-19).
