Moose Jaw high school track and field athletes were shaking off the rust and trying to start off the year on the right foot on Thursday. The sun was shining for the first mini-meet of the season at Gutheridge Field.

"This is what I live for, so I'm really happy that it's starting to kick-off," said Riverview sprinter Kirsten Hunter. "I love the adrenaline, being outside and competing, it's pretty great."

The athletes were able to test themselves in a number of events at the meet as they start to prepare for the month-long track season ahead, which really picks up with the Moose Jaw Invitational next weekend.

With that in mind, fine tuning and testing out offseason work was the focus for a lot of athletes during the meet.

"I've been training and this is my sport, so I'm ready to go," said Central senior Carter Voth, who finished first in senior boys discus and second in shot put to kick-off the season.

Voth went to provincials in both events last year and will be looking to repeat that feat again this year. He said he feels like he’s off to a strong start, "My throws for both events were further than I ever threw last year and they're pretty close to personal bests already, so it's looking good so far," he said.

"I'm hoping to get to provincials and I'm looking for a city record."

Hunter got off to a blazing start on the track as she picked up a second place finish in both the junior girls 100-metre and 200m races on Thursday.

"I'm really aiming for provincials this year," she said.

Last year, Hunter was well on her way to making an appearance at the provincial championship, but a car accident ended her track season. She received 29 stitches and staples in her leg and permanent nerve damage in her hand were the fallout from the crash.

Hunter said she's thankful to be back on the track and competing this year.

"It took a while mentally to get back, but physically, it took a long time to even be able to walk, so for me to be out here running on the track, I'm super, super happy," she said.

"I'm really excited to be here and hopefully I can bounce back."

Peacock senior Jackson Woloschuk has his sights on the quadrathlon event again this year, showing a range of athletic ability by competing in the 100m, 800m, long jump and shot put.

"This is a good chance to get out and see how you're feeling this year, see where you're at, how fast you're running, how far you're throwing and how far you're jumping," said Woloschuk.

"With the quad, you've got to stay focused all year and work hard."

Prepping to compete in the quad is different than if you’re just a sprinter or just a thrower. Woloschuk said he just tries to take it event by event.

"You can't look too far ahead ever, you have to just focus on the event that you're going for at the moment," he said. "You've got to know your strengths and weaknesses too, my shot isn't great right now, so I've got to keep working on those."

The high school track season continues on Wednesday next week with the second mini-meet and that leads into the Moose Jaw Invitational next Saturday at Gutheridge Field.
