The Hillcrest Golf Course will be hosting the 2021 junior boys and girls golf championships, but it's hoped the real winners will be the inspiration provided to the course's young and future talent.

Golf Saskatchewan made the announcement last week, and Hillcrest general manager Jasmine Cameron was excited to be able to host the event, which will take place July 13-15.

She said they wanted to give some inspiration to some of the younger golfers.

“We worked closely with Golf Sask in putting in a bid to host,” Cameron said. “And we worked with them to ensure we had the proper facilities, which included the 18 hole golf course, junior tees, warm-up facilities, and facilities for them to come to the course and feel comfortable in a COVID-safe environment to be able to host a tournament for roughly 70 plus junior golfers.”

Among those, she’s hopeful that a decent number will be from Moose Jaw and area.

“Those are the players who we’ll see in the future keeping our courses open and playing our courses with their families,” she said. “We wanted to offer our junior players an opportunity to both experience a junior championship as well as volunteer for it, as well as watch some of the junior players that are coming from all over the province.”

Cameron said eight to ten players would be a good number to shoot for to take part in the championships. “We haven’t had the opportunity to offer competitive tournament play for our juniors, so this is another step in the right direction to offer them that, and introduce them to that type of play so potentially they can continue on and go into these types of championships into the future,” she said.

Cameron said they’ve seen good things from junior players recently from ages 4 to 16, and they want to keep them interested with mentorship.

“It’s a great game and it’s a great social distancing game,” Cameron said. “So we’re highlighting different positives we can offer at the course for juniors.”

And young golfers wanting the qualify can contact the course and they’ll help them with registration for Golf Sask and their events, or they can contact Golf Sask themselves.
