Moose Jaw Warriors captain Brett Howden, Tim Hunter and Team Canada cruised to a 2-0 record at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship on Wednesday night.

Canada skated past Slovakia, 6-0, to close out a busy back-to-back start to the tournament for the Canadians.

Sarnia Sting forward Jordan Kyrou led the way for Canada with a goal and two points in the win, while Owen Sound Attack forward Jonah Gadjovich picked up two goals.

Colgate University goalie Colton Point made 20 saves for the shutout.

Howden was held off the score sheet in the win, but had a number of chances in the first period, including hitting the post on a short breakaway.

Regina Pats forward Sam Steel opened the scoring with the lone goal in the first period. Kyrou, Gadjovich and Erie Otters forward Taylor Raddysh scored in the second period to make it a 4-0 game heading into the third.

Gadjovich and Maxime Comtois of the Victoriaville Tigres scored late in the third period to seal the win for Canada.

The Canadians will now get Thursday off to rest up for a showdown, outdoors, with the Americans on Friday afternoon at New Era Field. Puck drops at 2 p.m.

In other World Junior action on Wednesday, Switzerland skated to a 3-2 win over Belarus.
