A hectic 3-in-3 weekend for the Moose Jaw Warriors closed with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win against the Medicine Hat Tigers on Sunday at Mosaic Place.

Warriors captain Brett Howden scored his fourth goal of the weekend with 1:54 left in overtime, banging in a rebound in the Tigers' crease, to lift the Warriors to the win in a back-and-forth game.

Defenceman Brandon Schuldhaus had two goals, while Dmitri Zaitsev and Jayden Halbgewachs also found the back of the net for Moose Jaw.

The Warriors and Tigers are known for their speed and skill, and as expected they used those attributes to establish a fast-paced first period.

As the action went back-and-forth in the first 20 minutes, it was the Warriors who got on the scoreboard first, six minutes into the game Brayden Burke took the puck across the Tigers line and held on to the puck along the boards as he waited for his teammates, he finally connected with Howden, who then drove towards the net, but wasn’t able to get a shot away. Instead he skated behind the net and came out on the left wing where he set up Schuldhaus for a quick shot that beat goalie Jordan Hollett on the blocker side for his first goal of the season.

Only 1:26 into the second period, the Warriors controlled the puck inside the Tigers line, Halbgewachs came off the left wall and slide the puck towards the blue-line where Schuldhaus stepped into a slap shot that beat Hollett to for his second goal of the game.

Just over a minute later, at 2:40, Zaitsev dangled his way towards the Tigers net from the blue-line and snapped a shot that beat Hollett for his fourth goal of the season, giving Moose Jaw a 3-0 lead.

Medicine Hat was able to respond at 4:44, when defenceman Kristians Rubins let a wrist shot go from the left wall and into traffic that fouled Brody Willms.

Late in the second, the Warriors created a number of scoring opportunities as they outshot the Tigers, 15-11, in the frame, but they weren’t able to extend their lead.

The teams exchanged opportunities again in the third period and approaching the seven-minute mark, the Warriors went up by three as Ryan Peckford handled the puck behind the Medicine Hat net and tossed it to the low slot where Halbgewachs was able to tip it in for his WHL-leading 48th goal.

Despite being down by three, the Tigers continued to push and in the second half of the third period they found their rewards. At 10:26, Jaeger White scored to make it a two-goal game; then at 16:18, the Tigers’ Bryan Lockner scored on the game’s only power play to claw Medicine Hat closer; and then with their goalie pulled in the final minute of regulation, Tigers captain Mark Rassell deflected a point shot to tie the game at four.

In overtime, both teams once again had great opportunities to end the game and the outcome came down to a battle in the crease.

Howden pushed the puck to the Tigers’ blue paint and as Medicine Hat collapsed to help their goalie, Howden was able to jam it over the goal line for his 17th of the year, lifting the Warriors to the win.

Howden and Halbgewachs finished with a goal and three points each, while Willms made 36 saves in the win.

After a three-in-three weekend the Warriors are now off until next weekend when they’ll have a pair of division road games.  On Friday, they’ll make the short trip in to Regina and then next Sunday, they’ll head up to Saskatoon.
