Inspiring wounded military members on their road to recovery is the goal of the Invictus Games.

Prince Harry established the Games in 2014 with the first edition being held in London, U.K. This year, Toronto will play host to the Invictus Games with over 550 athletes from 17 countries descending on the Ontario city next month.

In the lead up to the 2017 Invictus Games, a National Flag Tour is being hosted in 50 communities across Canada and it came to Moose Jaw on Monday and Tuesday, stopping at the David Currie V.C. Armoury and 15 Wing Moose Jaw.

Corporal Daniel Goncalves is the Invictus Games National Flagbearer for this stretch of the tour and he said it’s an honour to be included in this event.

“I’m very humbled to have been chosen for this event, it’s an event that symbolizes a lot of strength in the Canadian military and the rest of the militaries that are participating in the Games,” said Goncalves.

Goncalves is a first generation Canadian that has been serving in the military since 2008. He’s now stationed at CFAD Dundurn near Saskatoon.

With many friends who have been injured while serving, Goncalves said he’s honoured to be taking part.

“One of my friends, Bill Kerr, was injured in Afghanistan and lost three limps and a few others have been injured and those individuals inspire me to do great things,” said Goncalves.

“It’s great that the Games are here in Canada because I feel like our military isn’t as recognized as much as it should be, we train hard and have always proven ourselves in World War 1, 2, Afghanistan and so on.”

The National Flag Tour is traveling from coast-to-coast and will visit 22 Canadian Armed Forces, 15 legions and over 50 communities over the course of a month.

The 2017 Invictus Games will take place from Sept. 23-30 in Toronto.
