During the 2010 Saskatchewan Winter Games held here in Moose Jaw, the Southwest District dominated in judo.  They're hoping for a repeat of that effort this year in Prince Albert.

We'll find out which athletes will be representing the local district this weekend with the Southwest District Playdowns being held at the Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club.  Members of the Pense and Swift Current Judo Clubs will be in the city vying for a spot in the 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games.

“There will be a round robin format and the winner of each round robin for each weight and gender division will be the first selection for the team,” said Jim Wiens with the Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club.  “We also have what we call fill athletes, so if there isn't a spot from another district that isn't able to fill a full team, there's a possibility that our second and third place athletes might also be able to attend the games.”

The number of athletes coming to Moose Jaw this weekend is still up in the air, but Wiens is expecting the team to be very strong heading into Prince Albert.

“All three clubs in this district are very strong forces when it comes to competition for judo and I'm quite confident that both with the level of athletes and coaching that this team will have that they'll have a very strong performance at the games,” said Wiens.

The eligible athletes are in the 1999 to 2003 age groups.  The playdowns run on Saturday with registration at 11:00am and the round robin starting at 12:00pm.

The 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games go on February 16th to 22nd in Prince Albert.
