The Kinsmen Moose Jaw Speed Skating Club is gearing up for this year’s season and is encouraging people to come out and try the sport.

The season begins October 1st, and the club is offering a variety of speed skating classes to people of all ages.

Children as young as 5 years old can go out and participate.

The option of skating once to 3 times per week is open to everyone and registration is open all season.

People registering for the first time should look into getting themselves protective glasses, a helmet, knee and shin pads, a neck guard, and skates.

The club does offer a skate rental program for anyone interested.

The cost for classes depends on the age of the student and how many times they’re looking to skate a week.

To register for classes, you can visit their website at www.moosejawspeedskatingclub.wildapricot.org.

You can also get more information from the Kinsmen Moose Jaw Speed Skating Club Facebook page or their email mjspeedskating@gmail.com.

The classes take place at the kinsmen arena, but they also practice at the outdoor oval in Kiwanis River Park at Wakamow Valley.

“We have the nicest venue when it comes to pleasing to see. To skate outdoors and skate down in the valley, it’s beautiful down there. We’ve had great success with our ice so we hope that continues… It’s great for us and its great that the public can watch us skate as well because we do share our ice with them. So, it’s great that the public can come down and enjoy the facility as well as watch us out there skating too.” says Verna Kergan, a coach for the club.

Coming up, the Kinsmen Speed Skating Club is inviting people out to an open skate.

Anyone can come and try the sport. It’s happening on October 3rd and 10th from 3:15 pm until 4:15 pm.

It’ll be free of charge and skates and equipment will be provided. You’re only asked to bring a helmet.

On their website, you can also find information on all of their upcoming tournaments and the upcoming Saskatchewan Winter Games taking place February 20th to 23rd for speed skating.

Kergan is encouraging anyone interested to come out and have fun.

“We’re a very welcoming club and we welcome all people to come and give it a try. Whether it’s kids or adults. Everyone’s welcome and we hope you’ll come out and give us a try.” says Kergan.
