Winnipeg is back in the Western Hockey League.

The WHL announced on Tuesday that the Kootenay Ice will be moving from Cranbrook, B.C. after the 2018-19 season and setting up shop in the Manitoba Capital.

Winnipeg has been without a WHL team since 1984 when the Warriors relocated to Moose Jaw.

The Ice moved from Edmonton to Cranbrook in 1998 and during their time in the Kootenay region, they won three WHL Championships (2000, 2002, and 2011), as well as the Memorial Cup in 2002.

"The WHL appreciates the support we have received from the City of Cranbrook, the corporate community, and, in particular, hockey fans in the East Kootenay region, however, after many years of monitoring the operations of the Kootenay ICE, it is evident this franchise is not viable in the market moving forward," stated WHL Commissioner Ron Robison in a media release.

"It is a difficult decision, but given low attendance trends and the support required to operate a WHL Club, it is necessary to move the franchise to a market where it can be sustainable on a long-term basis."

The Ice has the second lowest average attendance in the WHL during the 2017-18 season with 2,442 fans. They've averaged a league-worst 2,199 fans this season.

The name and logo will remain the same for the team, however, the Ice will join Moose Jaw in the East Division, while the Swift Current Broncos will head to the Central Division along with the four teams in Alberta.

The Ice will finish the season at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook before relocating to Winnipeg where they will play in the Wayne Fleming Arena at the University of Manitoba over the next two seasons. They will then move into a new, privately funded 4,500-seat arena that will be shared the Rink Hockey Academy.

The Warriors played their final game in Cranbrook on Nov. 28, 2018.

The Ice are currently last in the Central Division with a 10-32-7-1 record this season.
