With their sights on provincials next weekend, Moose Jaw high school track-and-field athletes put together a stellar day on Wednesday.

The top performers from last week's Moose Jaw, South West, South East and North section meets descended on Gutheridge Field for the South Central District Championship. The top-two finishers in each event secured a spot at the provincial championship.

Moose Jaw took the top aggregate spot in five of the six age divisions with Assiniboia's Logan Fettes in the senior boys division being the only one to edge out a Moose Jaw athlete, beating Central's Kal McGillis by two points.

The midget girls division saw Vanier's Maurissa Metz claim top spot with 38 points after winning the 100-metre, 80m hurdles and long jump, while finishing second in the 200m. Peacock's Anna Maelde was right behind Metz in second place with 28 points. She won the 400m and high jump, while placing second in triple jump.

Maelde was able to set the high jump record by clearing 1.54 metres.

"It felt pretty good because throughout the whole season I've just been trying to my personal best and breaking the record made it even better today," said Maelde after setting the new mark.

The Peacock grade 10 entered the event with a 1.52m personal best and she knew that if she could top that, she would also walk away with the record.

"My coach, Mr. Carter, helped me through it and just getting it in my head that I could do it," said Maelde.

"I'm pretty happy with my performance today."

There was one other record set on the day as Gravelbourg's Courtney Brisebois set a new record in the midget girls shot put with a throw of 10.46m.

Vanier's Rainer Olson was the top midget boy with 36 points. He won the 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m and also finished third in the 400m.

Alexis Thibodeau from Peacock swept her four events to claim the junior girls aggregate during another dominating performance in a season filled with them so far. She won the 100m, 200m, 80m hurdles and high jump.

Central's Kienan Kleisinger and Vanier's Rayann Cabral have been battling all season in the junior boys division and that continued at districts as they tied for top spot in the aggregate. Kleisinger edged out Cabral in the 100m and 200m, while also taking top spot in the 400m and third in long jump. Cabral was second in the two sprints and won in long jump and triple jump.

Peacock's Josie Gosling won the senior girls aggregate with a win in the 100m, 200m and long jump, as well as a third place finish in the triple jump.

The senior girls quadrathlon was won by Central's Katie Coulson with 1,810 points, which was just enough beat out Caronport's Melissa Ellis by 16 points.

Coulson entered the 800m in second place and needed a win to secure top spot and she did just that, passing Peacock's Hannah Audette over the final 25 metres to win.

"It felt really good, the girl that got second, Melissa, she did really well and I just lucky that I got to pull it out in the end," said Coulson. "The 800 was a personal best, so I was really happy."

Coulson finished second to Ellis in the 100m and long jump, and was third in shot put.

She will now test her hand against the province's best and Coulson said she's looking forward to the challenge. "I'm very excited," she said. "I just want to do my best, I don't know where I'll stand, so I'll just give it my all."

Peacock's Jackson Woloschuk won all four events in the senior boys quad to roll to the title and secure his spot at provincials.

The SHSAA provincial track-and-field championship will be held next Friday and Saturday in Prince Albert.
