A few Moose Javians and a former Moose Jaw native hit the podium this weekend at "home".

The 2015 Western Canadian Powerlifting and Bench Press championships were held at the Golden Nugget Centre on the Exhibition Grounds on Saturday.

In the 93kg Open Classic Division, Moose Jaw's Aaron Ziffle took 2nd with a 255kg squat, 182.5kg bench press, and 245kg deadlift.

He finished behind David Stevens, who lived in Moose Jaw until leaving for Saskatoon (where he still resides, with his wife and 1-year old son) to attend the University of Saskatchewan, where he played for the U of S Huskies football team.

Moose Jaw's Rob Rooney finished 8th in the same category.

Meanwhile, Moose Jaw's Dustin Fraser competed in the 93kg Junior Classic Division and finished 3rd with a 190kg squat, 117.5kg bench and a 230kg deadlift.

On the women's side, Moose Jaw's Brianna Walz, in just her second competition, won the 72kg SubJunior Classic category with an 85kg squat, 55kg bench press and 110kg deadlift.  She now qualifies for Nationals this February in Regina.

Pam Windrum was also a winner.  The Moose Javian took the 84+kg Open Classic category with a 152.5kg squat, 80kg bench and a 152kg deadlift. The weekend event was Windrum's first competition back after taking about a year off after having a child.

Saturday's event was capped off by a "Last Chance" Invitational meet for lifters who were not qualified for Westerns, but gave them an opportunity to make the cut for Nationals in February.

Moose Jaw's Amee Mawson finished 2nd in 84+kg category, while Rory Windrum placed 2nd in the 83kg Open Classic category, and they will now attend the national championships.
