It was an up-and-down weekend for the Brett Behm rink, but they won when it counted this past weekend in Watrous.

The Moose Jaw team secured a spot in the Saskatchewan Junior Men’s Curling Championship by winning three straight games on Sunday at the second qualifying spiel.

“It felt really great, it was a great weekend for us,” said Behm.  “We all played really great and it was nice to get one of those spots (at provincials).”

Behm, along with third Dominic Neufeld, second Brendan Ross and lead Theo Lautsch, started strong with wins in both their opening games on Friday, but they struggled to find that same groove on Saturday as they dropped both their games.

Those two losses dropped the Behm rink down to the ‘C’ Event and meant that it was win or go home for the team.

“We started off really strong in the first two games and then on the second day, we had a rough patch and we had a team meeting after our game against Vereschagin, discussed what we needed to do because we knew that we needed to win three straight to qualify and we pulled through and all played amazing that last day,” said Behm.

The momentum started with a hard fought 5-4 win over Kronau’s Brecklin Gervais.  They then picked up a 10-4 win over Maidstone’s Cody Sutherland.

“It was a very big confidence booster when you know that you have momentum on your side and you just have to keep going after that,” said Behm on their Sunday run.

The win that clinched the Behm rink’s spot at provincials came against fellow Moose Jaw curler Carson Ackerman as they scored a 9-6 victory on Sunday night to claim the last spot at the event.

All four members took part in the Juvenile Provincials last year with Behm, Ross and Lautsch curling together and Neufeld with another rink.

“It will be a great experience for all four of us to head to provincials and I hope we do well,” said Behm.

The junior provincials will be held at Regina’s Callie Curling Club starting on Dec. 27.
