The Moose Jaw Kinsmen Flying Fins are coming off a very strong weekend at the Regina Marlins Fall Freeze Out meet.

The Fins claimed 13 individual first place finishes at the meet, as well as a win in the female 200m Medley Relay. They also had two events in the 12-and-under girls division where the club's swimmers finished first, second and third.

“We swam 89-percent personal best times at this meet and we had about 85-percent at the meet previous to this, so we're just building what we did last year, we had some tremendous success at the end of last season and we're building on top of that now,” said head coach Gord Shields.

It seems like the Fins have picked up right where they left off last season and have even gotten stronger in the first few meets of this season.

Shields said the swimmers have been dedicated to getting stronger each time they hit the pool.

“It took a couple of years for them to adjust to a different type of coaching and coaching philosophy, and at the end of last season, we had some great success at some major swim meets,” Shields said. “Now we're getting more and more swimmers that are qualifying for these high level swim meets.”

Makena Simmons was named the female swimmer of the meet for the club after she captured 100-percent lifetime bests.

“She also picked up five new 'A' standards, which is the first level of the provincial championship competitions, so that was excellent,” said Shields.

On the male side, Rainer Olson came away with the swimmer of the meet honours for the club. He also had 100-percent personal bests and posted four 'AA' swims, as well as two 'A' swims.

“He had an outstanding meet and took a lot of time off of all his swims,” said Shields.

Cadence Johns had a stellar meet, winning gold in all six of her meets and picking up a personal best time in five of the six swims. Joey Derksen also brought home a bunch of hardware with four golds and one silver.

Elyssa Tacchi had a strong meet as well, picking up a pair of gold and four silver medals.

“There were really some outstanding events overall,” said Shields.

Next up for the local club will be a meet in Saskatoon on Dec. 5-6, and then they head to Winnipeg for an invitational swim meet the next weekend.
