Marc-Andre Doyon and Kali Ann Friesen will both be busy in February after a successful weekend on the ice at the Barkman Arena.

The two members of the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Speed Skating Club secured spots on Team Saskatchewan for the 2018 Canada Winter Games this past weekend.

"It's going to be a great competition, I'm putting in a lot of work, so everything from nutrition, sleep to training goes into it and just trying to not peak right now, but in February," said Doyon.

Doyon ended up placing third overall in the male division at the short track trials on Saturday and Sunday in Caronport. He finished second in the 500-metre and won the 1000-metre.

He said he's happy with how he's skating right now but wants to continue to improve as the Canada Winter Games approach.

"Short track isn't my strongest point, but my fitness and strength is there, I'm still figuring out strategy and technique," said Doyon. "I've figured out a lot about how strong I can be and how much I can push myself."

With a spot on the short track team secure, Doyon is now focused on also qualifying for the long track team with the first trial scheduled for the end of the month.

Doyon has been very pleased with his start to the long track season, "I've had two competitions so far in Calgary, I've gotten [personal bests] in it, which is amazing because I've not trained on long track ice yet," he said.

Friesen won the female 1,500m race and just missed the podium with fourth place finishes in the 500m and 1,000m.

The Canada Games trials were being held last weekend in conjunction with the annual Moose Jaw Short Track Meet, which saw 104 skaters from around the province competing over the two days.

13-year-old Jesse Cline said he had a really good two days, "I just got a personal best," he said. "I drafted off the person in first for 13-and-a-half laps and then passed her at the end."
