The Moose Jaw Mallards are looking to come back from Saskatoon with some hardware this weekend as they head to the Bridge City for the 2017 Baseball Saskatchewan Bantam AA Tier 2 Championship.

Moose Jaw claimed silver in the Baseball Regina League and will be hoping to change that medal colour to gold heading into provincials.

“We’re on a hot streak, we’re hitting good, fielding good and everyone is just playing good so far,” said Mallards catcher Sam Caplette.

The Mallards started the season on a roll, but hit a bit of a lull in the middle of the season. They were able to right the ship in time for the playoffs and are feeling good about where their game is as they open travel to Saskatoon.

“We’re going to be ready to go,” said Head Coach Shawn Kohl. “Our pitching has definitely picked up and the hitting has picked up.”

In the Baseball Regina League playoffs, the Mallards upset the Regina White Sox in the semifinal, Regina had only lost once heading into that game. In the final, the Mallards just couldn’t buy a break against the Melville Millionaires.

Kohl said the way that the league playoffs ended should make for a hungry team heading into provincials.

“They’ve worked hard, we’ve had them here in the cage, we’ve had them on the field and done a ton of grounders and pop flies,” said Kohl.

At provincials, the key for the Mallards will be defence.

“Our coach always says that whoever makes the least amount of errors usually wins and in the last five games, we’ve done that and won pretty much everyone,” said Caplette.

“We had our slump and now we’re playing good.”

The Mallards will open provincials on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. against the Yorkton Cardinals. They finish the round robin with two games on Saturday as they face the Carrot River Loggers at 9 a.m. and the Saskatoon Blue Jay Sluggers at 3 p.m.

The playoff round goes on Sunday with the final at 3 p.m.
