This past weekend was a snapshot of the entire season for the Moose Jaw Mallards.

They struggled to start things off and then finished strong.

After losing their opening two games at the Baseball Sask Bantam AA Provincial Championship in Yorkton, the Mallards bounced back with two wins on the weekend to finish with a 2-2 record.

“We started off a little slow, didn't have the bats with us that first day, but then the last two games, they really came around and started hitting some home runs, which was nice to see,” said head coach Dave Helland. “Those last two games, everything came together and we got a couple of good wins.”

The Mallards lost 15-2 to the Humboldt Dodgers in their opening game on Friday morning and then dropped a 9-3 game to the Weyburn Beavers that night.

They came back strong on Saturday night with a 10-5 win over the Saskatoon Scrub Jays and then finished off the season on a high note with a 14-4 win over the Lloydminster Twins on Sunday.

“We basically knew we were out of it after losing those first two, we really didn't have a chance of winning it all, so I said, 'You know what boys, leave it all out there over these last couple of days,' and they did that,” said Helland. “They all came together and it was good to see.”

The Mallards didn't have much success during their regular season in the Baseball Regina Bantam AAA division, but they started to find a stride over the last month of the year.

They went into Melville and won the 'B' side of a tournament there, posting a 3-2 record and then finished it off with a solid showing at provincials.

Helland said he was very happy with the progress that the team showed throughout the year.

“These kids got better everyday and they've become ball players,” he said. “It was nice to see the last month that the hard work was paying off. Going 2-2 in provincials isn't that bad really, so it was good to see them getting better everyday.”

Humboldt went on to the win the provincial title, beating Unity 10-0 in the final.
