Fifteen-year-old Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Denton Mateychuk won't be making the Warriors out of camp this year but he wants to leave an impression on the Warriors as he heads into his first season of midget.

Mateychuk was one of almost 90 Warriors who met with the team's coaching staff and management last night on the eve of training camp.

"I just want to help learn and see what the coaches want," said Mateychuk. "Anything I can do to improve my game and help other people improve their game. I just want to take what i can get out of it."

After being selected 11th overall in the 2019 WHL bantam draft, Mateychuk is looking forward to the rookie camp.

"It's good to meet the guys and see all the people here, adn get to know everyone better, and I'm excited for the week".

Rookie camp starts today with scrimmages tomorrow, and Mateychuk may be moving on to main camp Saturday.

Warriors general manager Alan Millar said how many players move from rookie camp to main camp is to be determined. He said the idea behind rookie camp is to look for players you would consider listing and adding to the protected list that could play later down the road.

"There will be players that move on, but at the same time, they have to be ready to move on and that'll all be part of the process for what we do at rookie camp here," said Millar.

Today is fitness testing, rookie practice and goaltender sessions, with scrimmages going tomorrow at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
