The Moose Jaw Midget Mustangs opened their season with a commanding 8-4 win over the Regina Attack on Thursday night in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League.

Caelan Fitzpatrick had two goals and five points in the win, while Atley Calvert picked up a pair of markers for the Mustangs.

Moose Jaw started slowly with the Attack opening the scoring only 1:07 into the game. Calvert's first tied the game for the Mustangs late in the period as the two teams sat tied after one.

The Mustangs pulled away in the second period with goals from Fitzpatrick, Kael Nichols, Brydon Bell and Ethan Johnson to make it 5-2 heading into the third.

The two sides traded goals in the opening minute of the third period as Rylen Weddle scored for Regina 38 seconds into the period but Calvert answered back for the Mustangs just 21 seconds later.

The Attack cut the lead back down to two a few minutes later, but Fitzpatrick answered quickly again for the Mustangs and Jacob Gyman added a late goal to seal the win.

The Mustangs will host the Regina Inferno at Mosaic Place on Monday night at 8 p.m.

Coming up this weekend in local lacrosse action, the Peewee Mustangs 1 host the Estevan Voltz on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m, the Peewee Mustangs 2 welcome in the Voltz on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. and the Senior Chiefs open their season against the Meewasin Valley Plainsmen on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games go at the Kinsmen Arena.
