The Moose Jaw Miller Express kicked off their four-game Northern Alberta road trip on a winning note on Thursday night.

Moose Jaw made their first trip into Fort McMurray and came away with a 4-2 win over the Giants at Shell Place.

Fort McMurray jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second innings.

The Millers were able to answer quickly in the third inning, starting with third baseman Lane Harvey leading off the frame with a single. He stole second and then came around to score on an error. Two hitters later, first baseman Ben Dalke cashed in shortstop Scott Platt with a double to even the score at 2-2.

Moose Jaw took the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by catcher Zach Fascia.

After giving up the two runs in the first two innings, starting pitcher Zach McDonald settled in and allowed just one hit over the next four innings. He picked up the win after allowing two runs on four hits over six innings.

The Millers’ bullpen was lights out after that with Grant Westmoreland, Galen Andrews and Dalke combining to throw an inning each of shutout baseball to seal the win.

Platt had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Dalke was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks, while second baseman Joshmar Doran went 2-for-4 on the night.

The win improves Moose Jaw’s record to 14-9 on the year, which has them 1.5 games back of the Regina Red Sox for top spot in the Eastern Division.

The Millers are back at Shell Place on Friday night to close out their two-game set with the Giants. First pitch is at 7:35 p.m.
