After Tuesday night's loss to Swift Current, the Moose Jaw Miller Express talked about a need to get out of the gates quicker. They did that on Wednesday, but couldn't hold on late.

The Millers scored twice in the first inning, but the Okotoks Dawgs tied the game with two in the seventh inning and won 5-2 in 11 innings at Ross Wells Park.

"Maybe their pitcher settled into a bit of a groove (after the first inning), but I know our guys were really trying to fight hard in the box and it was just one of those days," said Millers shortstop Geordie McDougall.

The loss dropped the Millers' record to 18-19 on the year and combined with Swift Current's 9-3 win in Melville, Moose Jaw dropped three games back of the 57s.

Moose Jaw is looking for some consistency in their game with the playoffs just over a week away.

McDougall said while their play may be up-and-down right now, they've found a way to stay in every game and give themselves a chance.

"It's a lot of games in one of these summers and it could seem like it's just routine of going to the yard every day, but maybe we just need to focus harder on every inning and take care of the little stuff, we're doing an alright job and we're going to keep coming back to the field every day with a good mindset," said McDougall.

"Every game is close and we're just that one big hit away or that one big strikeout on the mound."

Outfielder Eric Marriott led off the game with a single, which McDougall followed up with a double and then they both came around to score on an error during outfielder Ty Schnidel’s at-bat to make it 2-0 after one.

The score stayed that way as both starting pitchers settled in.

Moose Jaw's Mitchell Robinson had held the Dawgs off the board heading into the seventh inning when a walk, a hit-by-pitch and two singles led to two runs for Okotoks.

Robinson ended up allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts in seven innings of work during the no-decision.

Okotoks starter Brock Townsend struck out eight and walked none over five innings of work. Moose Jaw tagged him for one earned run on five hits.

After neither team could break through in regulation, the two sides went into extras and the Dawgs struck in the top half of frame, benefitting from an error in the infield by Moose Jaw to score three runs and take the win.

Dawgs reliever Jesse Coleman threw three shutout innings, striking out four and walking two to earn the win, while Craig Smith pitched a perfect 11th inning for the save.

Moose Jaw closer Travis Edgar was tagged with the loss after allowing one unearned run on one hit in a 1/3 of an inning.

At the plate, McDougall and Marriott picked up two hits each out of the top-two spots in Moose Jaw’s order. The rest of the team combined to go 3-for-31 with 15 strikeouts.

"It's going to be nice to get right back on the field against Okotoks again, they're a good team and we're looking to take it to them," said McDougall.

The Millers and Dawgs square off at 7 p.m. at Ross Wells Park.
