It was just one of those nights for the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Wednesday night. The Millers couldn't seem to catch a break as they lost 5-1 to the Regina Red Sox at Ross Wells Park.

"Just stuff was falling for them, they wouldn't get solid barrels and they'd fall, but sometimes stuff just doesn't go your way," said catcher Noah Moore after the loss.

The Millers plan on just chalking the loss, which dropped their record to 8-3 on the year, as just one of those games that happen over the course of a 48-game schedule.

Starting pitcher Gunner Pickett said while they couldn't catch a break, they also could have done a better job of helping themselves out.

"Everyone is going to have a different opinion of some of the calls, so as a team, we just need to have better approaches and, as coach said, swing at some better pitches," said Pickett.

The Red Sox tagged Pickett for two runs as they sent eight hitters to the plate during the first inning. A solo home-run by Adam De La Cruz in the second inning made it 3-0 for Regina, but that was all the damage they were able to do to Pickett.

The lefty from Longmont, Colorado settled in and retired 15 straight Red Sox batters to keep his team in the game.

"He got more confidence with his fastball, he started off in the pen, he was hurting a bit and didn't have the velocity that he usually has, so I kept forcing him to throw it, inside and out, both sides of the plate and that started really helping," said Moore on Pickett’s mid-game turnaround.

Pickett finished with 10 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk. All of those came in the first two innings before Pickett surrendered a double before exiting in the sixth.

"After the rough first inning, I settled in, cleaned things up, started being a bit more pinpoint with my pitches and once I settled it, it was a pretty good outing, minus the first inning," he said.

"The biggest part of it, I was tight in the first inning and then I started to loosen up and that's when I started to get a little bit better and better and started striking more guys out."

The Millers had just one base runner through the first four innings, but they were able to get on the board in the fifth when back-to-back doubles from John Prudhom and Moore made it a 3-1 game after five.

Moose Jaw only able to get one runner into scoring position in the next four innings after that and Regina added some insurance, scoring two runs in the ninth inning for the win.

Sam Cottingham-Beard picked up the win on the mound for Regina, throwing two shutout innings with three strikeouts and a walk.

Taso Stathopoulos threw three no-hit innings with four strikeouts and one walk to start the game for the Red Sox.

The Millers were held to just four hits in the loss, but three of them were extra base hits with Moore, Prudhom and Alex Hendra-Brown doubling for Moose Jaw.

Matt Perry threw 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball with two strikeouts in relief for the Millers, while Prudhom came on for the ninth inning, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk.

"We'll come back tomorrow, have a short memory," said Moore.

The Millers host the Fort McMurray Giants for a two-game set on Thursday and Friday nights at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7 p.m. for both games.
