Carrying over the momentum gained during Friday night’s walk-off win over the Melville Millionaires, the Moose Jaw Miller Express had the bats working again on Sunday night.

Moose Jaw scored six runs in the first inning and then padded their lead as the game went on in a 12-9 win over the Weyburn Beavers on Sunday at Ross Wells Park.

“There’s always good mojo out there after a comeback, walk-off win, and we definitely carried it over to today,” said designated hitter Cutter McDowell after the win.

It was the second straight win for Moose Jaw after they snapped their six-game losing streak on Friday with a 6-5 win over Melville.  Moose Jaw scored all six runs in the final two innings of Friday’s win and then were able to post six runs in the first inning on Sunday.

“It’s always good to get a first inning with six runs in it and then to be able to pound out six more, it was a good victory for us,” said McDowell.  “Everyone is clicking now and we’re ready to go and start stringing some wins together.”

McDowell filled up the box score in the win for Moose Jaw, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two stolen bases, a walk and an RBI.

First baseman Travis Ouellet also went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs for the Millers to help pace the big offensive outing.

The game didn’t start great for Moose Jaw as Weyburn came out and strung together three straight hits to open the first inning, scoring two runs for an early lead.

It didn’t matter to Moose Jaw as they had their first five hitter reach in the bottom of the first inning.  Six hits lead to six runs and a nice early cushion for the Millers.

The Beavers pulled within three thanks to another run in the bottom of the second and then cut the lead to two with another run in the fourth inning, but Moose Jaw got the run back and then added two more in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead after five.

The Millers continued to tack on more runs in the sixth when they kicked off the frame with back-to-back singles from McDowell and third baseman Cole Distler.  Catcher Jeremy Stidham brought home McDowell with a single and then Ouellet cleared the bases with a two-run double to make it 12-5.

Weyburn made things interesting with three runs in the eighth, but relief pitcher Mark Baughman pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.

Bo Sheridan got the start for the Millers and picked up his first win of the season, giving up five runs on seven hits over five innings of work.  He struck out four and walked three in the win.

Chris Suarez came on in relief of Sheridan, he gave up a solo home run to Colin Rintoul in the sixth and then allowed the three runs in the eighth.  He gave up four runs on four hits over three innings, striking out six and walking one.

Beavers’ starter Nick Dorcean was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs — three earned — on eight hits over four innings.

The win improves Moose Jaw’s record to 6-16 on the year and moves them one-game back of Melville for fifth in the Eastern Division.

“We’re definitely happy, we’re looser around the clubhouse, looser during BP, so we’re ready to bring it (Monday) and hopefully get two more wins against Regina,” said McDowell.

The Millers will be back on the field for two games in Regina.  First, they will finish a suspended game from June 14, which will start with the Red Sox up 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning and have the bases loaded with no out and a 3-1 count for Regina.

The suspended game will start at 6 p.m. and then the regularly scheduled game will follow immediately after.
