Moose Jaw's Skylar Ackerman is sitting at 1-1 after Day 1 of competition at the Saskatchewan Curling Trials for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

The Ackerman rink -- which also features third Madison Johnson, second Chantel Hoag and lead Samantha McLaren -- lost 7-4 to Madison Kleiter in their opener on Thursday, but the defending U18 provincial champs bounced back quickly with a 5-4 win over Elliot Martens in the night draw.

In her opening game, Ackerman opened with a single in the second and then she traded deuces with Kleiter. It was a three-ender in the fifth that swung the game in Kleiter’s favour. Ackerman was only able answer with a single in the sixth and Kleiter finished the match with a deuce in the seventh.

Ackerman faced another tough test against Martens, but a strong start gave her a solid base as the local rink opened with a deuce in the second and then stole one in the third to make it 3-0.

Martens scored a deuce in the fourth, Ackerman answered with one in the fifth, but Martens would tie the game up at 4-4 with a single in the sixth and a steal of one in the seventh.

Ackerman used the hammer to her advantage in the eighth and secured the win to finish the opening day.

Ackerman and company will be back on the ice at 2 p.m. against Emily Haupstein and then she faces Brooklyn Fahl at 7:30 p.m.
