Moose Jaw’s Lorraine Arguin put together a good run at winning another Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Curling Championship last week in Tisdale.

Arguin finished tied for first place coming out of the round robin after posting a 5-2 record and ended up losing 5-4 to Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson in the semifinal.

Anderson, who skipped Saskatchewan’s team at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, won her second straight senior title, beating Wadena’s Delores Syrota, 6-3 in the final. Anderson scored two in the seventh to go in front 4-3 and then stole two in the eighth for the win.

Arguin’s start at provincials was up and down, she won her first two games on the opening day last Wednesday — she beat Saskatoon’s Tracy Streifel, 7-5, and won 7-4 over Swift Current’s Connie Rayner — but then Arguin dropped her next two games, losing 5-3 to Syrota and 7-6 to Saskatoon’s Peggy Fernquist.

After that however, Arguin went on a three-game winning streak to end the round robin, including a 6-5 win over Anderson in the final game of round robin play.

She wasn’t able to carry that momentum over to the semifinal though, dropping a back-and-forth rematch with Anderson.

Arguin opened the scoring with a single in the second; Anderson answered with a single in the fourth and Arguin took a 2-1 lead with another single in the fifth.

In the sixth, Anderson picked up the first deuce to take a 3-2 lead, but Arguin was able to strike right back with two of her own to move back in front 4-3. With the hammer heading into the eighth, Anderson scored two for the win to advance to the final and win the championship.

Coming up this week on the curling ice, Moose Jaw’s Murray Stroeder and Karen Thies will be in action at the 2018 Master Joint Provincials in Saskatoon. Head to curlsask.ca for the full schedule.
