Moose Jaw’s Lorie Boyle will be taking her place alongside the rest of Saskatchewan’s golf legends later this year.

The local golfer was announced as part of the induction class of 2017 for the Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame on Thursday.

“I was pretty surprised, never once did I think I was going to get an award for something that I loved to do,” said Boyle. “It’s such an honour and so humbling. I can’t believe that they’ve actually inducted me, but I’m pretty proud of it.”

Boyle will be joined in this year’s induction class by Regina’s Tom McNall in the players category; Arne Peterson from Prince Albert in the Distinguished Service category; the 1964 provincial junior team (Murray Osborne, Andy Black, Rick Maguire and Gordon Chipperfield) in the Championship Team category; and Peter Cushner of Lloydminster in the Player and Distinguished Service category.

Boyle won her record-setting seventh Saskatchewan Senior Women’s Championship last year at the Willows Golf and Country Club in Saskatoon. That broke the record previously held by another Saskatchewan golf legend, Joanne Goulet.

“That was really exciting, I didn’t even know that I was that close to the record, so when they told me I was pretty pumped, I can’t wait to play again this year,” said Boyle.

In addition to her seven provincial titles, Boyle has won the Moose Jaw city championship on 26 occasions and holds course records at the Hillcrest, Harbor and Weyburn golf clubs.

Boyle starting golfing when she was 24 years old and really didn’t take to the game at first.

“I just kind of dabbled in it for the first couple of years and I didn’t like it. I was also competing in other sports too at the time, so I thought we’ll just leave it there and then I really got into it when I was 26 years old and I haven’t left the clubs go since, I just love it,” she said.

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon. Tickets for the event go on sale in August.
