Moose Jaw's Reece Newkirk is the newest member of the New York Islanders.

The Portland Winterhawks forward was selected with the 147th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2019 NHL Draft on Saturday in Vancouver.

Newkirk is coming off an outstanding second season in the Western Hockey League where he finished with 23 goals and 59 points in 68 games with the Winterhawks.

The 18-year-old played one season of midget AAA hockey in Moose Jaw, posting 17 goals and 40 points in 44 games for the Generals in 2016-17.

Newkirk joins Moose Jaw's own, and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, Clark Gillies, who played 12 seasons for the Islanders, winning four Stanley Cups on Long Island.

There were 28 WHL players drafted over the course of the two-day draft, including Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brayden Tracey going with the 29th overall pick to the Anaheim Ducks during the first round on Friday.
