Chantz Petruic is one step closer to living out his dream of playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Moose Jaw product was one of three forward prospects that signed their WHL Standard Player Agreements with the Warriors on Monday following strong performances at training camp this past weekend.

“It was a very special moment for me and my family,” said Petruic. “I’ve been through a few camps with other teams and to finally end up here, it almost feels like it was meant to be, so it’s awesome.”

The Warriors have now locked up seven prospects in the past two days coming out of camp.

Petruic was joined by fellow 17-year-old forward Jaxan Kaluski and 16-year-old left winger Tyler Smithies in officially joining the Warriors’ organization after the team signed Kale Clouston, Matthew Benson, Matthew Sanders and Brecon Wood.

All three players signed on Monday went undrafted in the WHL Bantam Draft, but earned their way up the Warriors’ prospect list over the past year.

“I worked on my game throughout the past two years and my second year of AAA really helped take my game to the next level,” said Petruic. “That’s carried over to camp here and I did what the coaches said, I used my speed and played smart and got it done.”

When Petruic makes his WHL preseason debut on Tuesday night, he will join his father, Jeff, as just the second Father-Son combo to suit up for the Warriors (Mark and Matt MacKay were the first).

Getting the opportunity to follow in his dad’s footsteps is something very special to Petruic.

“For all my family to see another Petruic out there on the Warrior ice is going to be pretty cool,” said Petruic, who had 21 goals and 28 points in 43 games with the Moose Jaw Generals last season.

Now that he’s signed, the five-foot-ten, 167 lbs forward has his sights set on making the Warriors.

“Just need to keep doing the little things, (Head Coach Tim Hunter) says all the little things help,” he said. “I just need to not think too much and be ready to go.”

Kaluski is coming off an excellent season with the Lloydminster Bobcats in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

The six-foot, 170 lbs left winger posted 14 goals and 22 points in 32 games during the regular season and eventually helped the Bobcats to the Telus Cup national championship tournament where he scored six goals and seven points in seven games.

After going undrafted two years ago, Kaluski said that he used that as motivation to get to this point.

“You’ve just got to keep working and keep the fact that you were undrafted out of your mind,” he said.

“Signing has been an amazing experience for me and my family, it’s been a long road and I’ve just been doing all the little things to find my way here. It was awesome to get this opportunity and I just tried to make the best of it.”

Smithies – six-foot-one, 165 lbs. -- comes to Moose Jaw after playing for the Leduc Oil Kings in the Alberta Midget Hockey League last season. He posted five goals and 12 points in 33 games.

“I’ve put in tons of work, four days a week of skating and working out and being in the gym, just a lot of work,” said Smithies.

“I came in here and just played my game, kept moving the puck, played a defensive game and tried to put a few in the goal column.”

All seven of the Warriors’ recent signees, as well as 2016 WHL Bantam Draft picks Brayden Tracey, Austin Herron, Jakin Smallwood and Matthew Sanders, will be making their WHL preseason debuts on Tuesday night when the Warriors host the Swift Current Broncos at Mosaic Place.
