A dominating weekend put a gold medal around the necks of the Moose Jaw FC under-17 boys team.

The local squad went 4-0 on their way to a first-place finish at the Winterfest tournament this past weekend in Regina.

Moose Jaw FC pulled out a 2-1 win over Yorkton in the final to finish off the perfect weekend.

"The boys played really, really good," said Moose Jaw FC coach Alex Bijelic. "We worked hard before that, we had 3-4 practices per week, the whole team was committed, they wanted to do it and they were motivated to do that."

Moose Jaw opened the tournament with a 6-2 win over Melfort and then they edged FC Regina, 7-3, to close out pool place.

The strong play continued in the semi-final when Moose Jaw secured their only clean slate of the weekend, beating Prince Albert 4-0 to set up a showdown with Yorkton in the final.

"Nobody was quitting on the field, whatever happens on the field, everybody was fighting for the next ball and it was just amazing," said Bijelic. "It was easy to coach the whole weekend, they were listening and executing everything that we were learning in practice."

The tournament win is a big confidence booster for Moose Jaw FC as they now turn their focus to the provincial championship, which will be contested in Saskatoon next month.

"We just want to win that as well," said Bijelic. "It’s going to be harder than Winterfest, there are more strong teams, but I believe in these guys, they can do it."
