After a time when they weren’t sure if it would be going on, Moose Jaw Minor Football is back for the season.

They played their first games over the weekend in the U14 and U12 divisions and things at McDonald Athletic Field are looking like football again.

Moose Jaw minor football president Bryan Boys said the games were well-played on the weekend.

“It’s going to be football as-is,” Boys said. “We’ve got a lot of restrictions. We’ve got to keep our crowds down. It’s business as usual and it was awesome to be back on the field. There’s a lot of hoops we have to jump through. We’ve got to make sure we’re doing the right things and taking care of our kids. But we’re going to do whatever it takes to play football.”

The first game on the schedule was a rematch in the U12 division between the Moose Jaw Spartans and the Lions. The Spartans won 45-22, with Reid Weiss getting a couple of big touchdown runs. They’ll meet again Saturday under the lights.

The U14 division had the Vikings kicking off with the Raiders on Monday. Owen Varjassy returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown en route to a 12-0 Raiders win.

The Raiders take on the Steelers in Swift Current Saturday while the Vikings play Swift Current next Wednesday.

While they are limited in spectators who can be outside, quite a few people will be able to watch the games through their vehicles at the practice field.

“We’re actually limited to basically 30 fans per team,” Boys said. “On a football team when you have 27 kids, you’ve got two parents, maybe grandma or grandpa want to come, brothers and sisters, it’s awfully tough.”

The practice field is in good shape right now.

“Actually, our practice facility is pretty amazing,” Boys said. “We have lights on both fields. We might even have better lights than we did at Elks right now. Our... last games were at 8 p.m. so we’re still doing our night games, which is really what our teams want. They want those under the lights. So it’s business as usual as far as times for games and all that. We had to take time to set up a tower and get lines put in and all that fun stuff, but all those fields have underground sprinklers we’ve been developing.”

They had to change the concession a bit, but they’re in great shape.

Boys said they are grateful to have the season.

“We’ve been lobbying for football… and I was getting a little frustrated,” he said. “At the same time I understand with everything going on it’s tough."
