At their most recent annual general meeting, the Moose Jaw Soccer Association has named James Booth it's new chairman.

Booth, 22, has plans on getting youth involved in soccer by getting into schools.

“Some of the things I’d like to help Moose Jaw Soccer would be school visits,” Booth said. “I’d like to help get back into the school system and do some classes in the gymnasium just helping the kids learn what soccer is and help with the fundamentals in that aspect.”

They also had an open house at the Yara Centre over the weekend.

Many minor sports are having issues retaining young people but Booth wants to emphasize the fun aspects of the sport.

“We’ll teach the kids new skills and a lot of fun team-building and all that kind of stuff,” said Booth. “In order to grow the numbers, we want to get into the schools, meet with the kids and talk with them, show them this sport is a lot of fun and show them that there are avenues to go with the sport in Moose Jaw.”

Minor soccer's indoor season starts this week. Registration is still available through their website.

Soccer coach in Moose Jaw Alex Bijelic has been named an assistant coach with the BMO Whitecaps FC Saskatchewan Academy.
