Moose Jaw's Kirk Mullen will be turning in his Prairie Hockey Academy blue for Team Saskatchewan's green this week.

The local hockey player is suiting up for Saskatchewan in the men's hockey tournament at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

"I'm super excited, it's going to be a great week, really fun and exciting," said Mullen, who's in his second season with the Prairie Hockey Academy's Elite 15 Cougars.

Mullen is putting together a stellar season with P.H.A. in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League, leading the team with 40 points in 30 games. He's also second on the team with 20 goals.

"It's been one of the best starts to the season of my career, so it's been going good," said Mullen. "I'm just competing harder than I ever hard before and my teammates are helping me to achieve the achievements that I'm achieving this year."

Mullen was selected in the sixth round of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft by his hometown Warriors and he will be joined on Team Saskatchewan by fellow Warrior prospect, goalie Brett Mirwald.

The tournament will feature some of the top junior prospects from across Canada and Mullen said he's looking forward to testing himself against that competition.

"I've been thinking about it since I was selected, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing because they selected me for a reason and whatever role that they give me, just play it to the best of my abilities," he said.

Mullen and Mirwald will be joined by Warriors 2018 first-round pick Eric Alaire, who will be playing with Team Manitoba this week, and fifth-round selection Corson Ceulamens with Team Alberta.

Saskatchewan will square off with the host Alberta squad in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.

"If everyone buys into their role and we bond together as a team, we'll do really good," said Mullen.

Saskatchewan continues the preliminary round against B.C. on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and then they battle Alaire and Manitoba on Monday at 1:30 p.m.

The medal games will be played on Friday.
