While players come from all over western Canada and beyond to play for the Moose Jaw Warriors, some players attending camp this year didn't have that far to drive at all.

Kirk Mullen is from Moose Jaw and was looking forward to camp all summer.

“It’s always the next step in the WHL, and you have to pick up your game a lot,” said Mullen. “But knowing I lived in Moose Jaw and the rink is only 20 minutes away. It helped me prepare a little bit better and bit a little bit more ready.”

That enthusiasm carried into the black and white game where he scored on a breakaway from the red line in.

“I trained a lot during the summer for this camp, to just get ready to go and be ready with all assets of my game and be ready to play hard,” he said.

Mullen played last year out in Caronport with the Prairie Hockey Academy E15 team, scoring 21 goals and 22 assists in 32 games.

There were five local players attending camp this year. Mullen was joined by defenceman Carter Price, and forwards Hunter Bowes, Atley Calvert, and Chase Jocelyn.

The Warriors will continue with their pre-season with a lot of new faces in their rookie game as they take on the Regina Pats rookies. Admission is by donation and proceeds will go to the Canadian Mental Health Association in memory of Ethan Williams.
