A great weekend for Moose Jaw lacrosse ended with an all-Moose Jaw battle to decide the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League's Novice Division champion.

The Moose Jaw Mustangs 1 pulled off an 11-4 win over the Mustangs 2 to capture the championship on Sunday night at the Kinsmen Arena.

"It feels pretty good," said 8-year-old Hayden Nidesh after helping his team to the championship win. "We worked hard, back checked, battled hard for loose balls and our goalies were good."

Moose Jaw actually won three out of four league championships on the weekend with the Peewee Mustangs winning on Friday and Midget Mustangs coming out on top on Saturday.

Mustangs 1 head coach Cody Nidesh said it's a testament to the program here in Moose Jaw that two local teams were able to battle it out for the title in the Novice Division.

"Our numbers in Novice grew from 17 players to 37, so splitting into two teams and having both end up in the gold medal game is a huge accomplishment for Moose Jaw Lacrosse and a great year all-in-all," said Nidesh.

The final was tight early on with the Mustangs 1 taking a 1-0 lead on a goal from Cooper Bruce just over two minutes into the game.

Nash Williams tied the game for the Mustangs 2 with 6:33 to go in the first period, but Brodyn Pladson and Carter Hudyma scored two goals late to give the Mustangs 1 a 3-1 lead after one.

Bruce scored 50 seconds into the second period to extend the Mustangs 1's lead to 4-1, but Luke Turner answered right back for the Mustangs 2 and then Kashton Smith cut into the lead further 3:20 later.

The Mustangs 1 picked up goals from Bennet Burns and Pladson late in the second period to restore the three-goal lead and make it a 6-3 game after two.

The third period saw the Mustangs 1 take control with four goals in the opening 6:25 and they would roll to the victory. Ryder Gilroy had a hat trick in the third period for the Mustangs 1, while Roman Markin and Pladson also scored.

Smith had the lone third period goal for the Mustangs 2.

The win capped off a perfect season for the Mustangs 1 as they went 12-0-1 over the course of the year in the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League.

"The kids just bought in to everything we coached, we're very organized, structured and disciplined on the court," said Nidesh. "At the start of the year, we just preached a bunch of fundamentals and they bought into everything."

The two Novice teams will now combine to head to the Canada Day Tournament in Calgary this coming weekend.
