Placing fun over cut-throat competition, a new volleyball club will be making its way to the area.

Two coaches out a Briercrest Bible College in Caronport, Jadon Ward and Ethan Larsen, co-founded the club and plan to use their 7 years of coaching experience to give kids the skills they need. With this camp, they don't want finances and skill level to be a barrier.

For around 5 years, they were out on the west coast coaching kids there before coming to Caronport. Both have a combined 20 years of playing experience at Highschool, CCAA and CIS levels.

In the new year, Phoenix Volleyball Club will be making the neighbouring community their home to give athletes in the surrounding area a club volleyball experience.

After Ward and Larsen had helped with an Elementary volleyball camp at Briercrest, they realized they should continue on with it.

"We had a really good time connecting with the kids," Ward said. "We just sort of remembered how much we enjoyed playing volleyball when it's just about having fun and we just wanted to give back to the community like that so that's sort of where it all started."

The two coaches plan to start the camp with two age groups, U14 Boys (Grades 6-8) and U16 Boys (Grades 9-10). With them, they plan to attend three tournaments and provincials.

"If people were to come it's somewhere kids can get a really good grasp on basic skill and also have a lot of fun with that, so yeah, obviously learning volleyball without the pressure to perform at a really high level all the time," Ward added.

Practice wise, they plan to have one meet up a week with the teams, then increase to two practices a week in February.

The club begins in the New Year with tryouts this January 6th from 6:15-7:45 at the Margaret Riemer Gymnasium at Briercrest College in Caronport. Parents can register their kids to the club online with a cost of $20 per participant.
