A mom travelled 2,245 kilometres to Swift Current to surprise her son who is competing in the Western Canada Summer Games.

Martha Porter, who is a mom to Thomas Porter, who is competing in volleyball for Team Nunavut made the trip a couple of days ago after originally not being able to make it. Her journey started when she flew from Yellowknife to Edmonton and then flew to Saskatoon.

It was there that Porter surprised herself as there was no way for her to get to Swift Current. "I had no idea that there was no more STC and I don't have a Visa so I can't rent a car."

After being stuck at the airport for close to eight hours and making numerous calls, she was finally able to find a way to get to the games.

"I was talking to my step-brother Paul, and it finally clicked that Julian Thomas (a relative) lives in Saskatchewan. That's when I messaged him, and at this point, I'm literally in tears and I'm scared. He knows a Rob, who happened to be my old high school coach and then Rob new a Dale Upton, who was the coach for the athletics at the Games. He got a hold of him, and then Dale got a hold of me and Julian said he was on his way to the airport and I couldn't believe this guy was here."

After what was an emotional journey just to get to Swift Current, she was finally able to see her son. "I saw him finally. I finally got to hug him," Porter said.

"He was practicing and he didn't see me and my kind of ran and waved away and he went 'Hi Mom!' and then quickly hugged me and went back to practicing."

For Porter, it marked the first time she has been able to watch her son play volleyball in quite a while. "I came from Yellowknife and I was going to school there. My son Thomas is living in Nunavut. He wanted to stay there because our families are there. It's hard for me to let him go, but I needed for him to do what he needed to do with volleyball."

She said that it was worth letting her son stay and play volleyball as he is now making history being a part of the first Nunavut male volleyball team to participate in the Western Canada Summer Games. "It's amazing and great to watch him and I'm his number one fan. I made sure I made it," she said. "I really happy to attend and to be able to hear and watch."
